About the Artist

Artist Statement

Initially my work involved creating fabric visual compositions by integrating vintage and contemporary fabrics. Recently, I've been using natural dye processes with such dyes as indigo, cutch, lac, cochineal, logwood, brazil wood, and dyer's chamomile. Additionally, I have an interest in the shibori stitch resist techniques found in Japanese textiles. When I combine natural dyes and traditional surface design methods with vintage buttons, trim and needlework, a new form evolves. I enjoy the process.

Grasshopper Garden is based on the belief that there is wonder in this world and natural beauty in each new day. When we notice and appreciate the beauty of the natural world, we nurture the creativity that is within each of us. Like gardening, creativity is an ever expanding and on-going process. Always evolving and ever-new, there is a constant search for the next variation, an improved version, and a fuller expression. Grasshopper Garden products reflect this belief.

Short Biography

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Master of Science in Education from SUNY Geneseo. After 5 years of teaching art and more recently, 20 years of public school teaching, I have returned to my original career as an artist. I currently live in Rochester, NY and divide my time between Studio 3-4, visiting family and friends, gathering and writing family history, reading, taking photographs, and developing my perennial herb garden. As a teacher of reading, language arts and literacy, I have always promoted life long reading and learning.
