About the Artist

Artist Statement

Fabric comprises both my canvas and paint. My paintbrush is a hand-held hook that pulls strips of wool fabric (not yarn) at intervals through a backing. Hand-dyed wool produces a depth and texture unlike any other medium. In my mind, I straddle both the world of representational art and interpretive art.

The method of producing hooked art is a slow one, allowing me to produce six to ten pieces per year depending on size and complexity. With designing, transferring the design to linen, hand-dying the wool, cutting the strips and hooking each quarter inch strip into place, a creation might take upwards of 12 hours per square foot.

My current favorite subject is portraits, both people and animals. Eyes, expression, skin tones, wrinkles, high-lights, all conspire to tell a story to the viewer. I create the portrait and let the story emerge.

Biosketch

Creating hand-hooked art has been my passion for 11 years. Eight years ago I left corporate America and now pursue my art full time. For six years I have directed Hooked in the Mountains Rug School at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont (in conjunction with the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild). This is a big endeavor: Fourteen teachers, approximately 250 students. Our website is GreenMountainRugHookingGuild.org.

I teach workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada, specializing in Unusual Uses of Color and Hooking Faces. My work has appeared in shows and museums in the Northeast and well as several books and magazines (info furnished on request). I happily accept commissions and charge in the range of $175 to $200 per square foot.

My husband, Bruce, and I share our home in Fairport with three dogs. We have two grown children and four grand children.
